The Higher Diploma in Aviation Management aims to prepare learners to establish their career in a range of different supervisory roles in aviation management in the exciting international air travel industry.

It also provides successful candidates with a formal higher education qualification from which they can progress to a higher level of tertiary education in the aviation management field.

This course is designed with modules specific to commercial aviation as well as contextualised business management units providing learners with specialised knowledge and skills in airline and airport management.

Course Objectives


This course is designed to provide students with an opportunity to pursue a specialisation in specific areas of Airline and Airport Management such that they can progress to establish their career from a range of different supervisory positions in airline and airport management. It also prepares the students for further study.


Learning Outcomes


Upon completion of the course, the students will develop essential knowledge and operational skills required for the aviation industry. Students will develop intellectual skills and demonstrate critical thinking in a variety of contexts for lifelong learning that will underpin their future career development, as well as prepare them for further study.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum Age: 18 Year Old


  • Language Proficiency
    • Attainment of IELTS 6.0, or other equivalent English qualification
    • (Applicants with IELTS band below 6.0 may be considered for entry subjected to undertaking SDH’ Certificate in Foundation Studies course before admitted into this course, for which they will be charged for a fee)


  • Normal Entry
    • SDH Diploma in Aviation and Travel Operations, or
    • Other CPE registered PEIs’ Diploma qualification, or • At least 1 GCE “A” Level passes, or
    • Equivalent qualification from a recognised higher learning institution, or
    • International students completed high school qualification (11th year)


  • Alternative Entry
    • Applicants with the minimum age of 30, who do not possess the above qualifications but have a minimum of 8 years working experience, may be considered for entry on to this course. Evidence of previous employment will need to be provided as well as a reference from the current/most recent employer (on letter-headed paper).


Mode of Delivery

  • The method of teaching consists of multiple delivery dimensions like classroom lectures, group discussions, work-based case studies, problem-solving and group activities.


Graduation Requirements

  • Obtained a passing mark in all modules


Progression Pathway

Upon graduation from the SDH Higher Diploma in Aviation Management, students may progress to take up the following programme subjected to university approval:

BA (Hons) Airline and Airport Management 


Course Duration

  • Full-time: 9 months
  • Part-time: 15 months

The International Air Travel Industry

The module aims to provide students with a holistic overview of the international air travel industry. They will develop knowledge and understanding of the scale of the international air travel or aviation industry and the role of organisations within the industry, including travel companies, airlines and airports. Students will learn the operating characteristics of different commercial airlines as well as airports. The module will also examine the inter-relationship amongst the organisations within the industry and how regulatory bodies, trade associations and ancillary organisations support this to form an aviation system that is safe, secure and seamless for users.

Airport Operations

Students will learn the various airport customers and partners and gain knowledge about the multiple operational and business functions of airports. The module will also explore the issues and challenges facing airports now and in the future.

IATA Foundation in Travel and Tourism I - International Air Travel

The travel and tourism industry sees the role of the travel professional as a consultancy-oriented one, providing high product knowledge, accurate information, excellent customer service and support, and creative thinking. Travel industry analysts and experts believe that these new roles provide new opportunities for career success. Foundation in Travel and Tourism I is designed to impart learners with the knowledge of international travel environment, fares and ticketing of the travel and tourism industry.

Introduction to Accounting and Finance

This module is designed to provide an introduction to the role of finance and accounting in business organisations Students will be imparted with the challenges that businesses face in relation to raising sources of finance, and learn to interpret and diagnose the accounting and financial information included in a set of published company financial statements.

Introduction to Organisational Behaviour

This module is designed to impart students with essential knowledge in understanding human work behaviour in the organisational setting and the application of psychological theories to resolve issues and overcome problems in the 21st century workplace. Students will learn how to interpret situations and apply the principles of management skills to handle problem-based situations in the workplace.

Academic Development and Career Planning

This module aims to impart students a life-long self-learning process approach in academic production skills to prepare them for higher education. The students will learn and apply key academic skills on presentation and research finding writing in the academic contexts on class assignments, projects and examinations. In addition, the module introductions students to professional development skills that will increase their employability profile. Students will learn effective communication skills and proper etiquette in the workplace.
