The Certificate in Foundation Studies programme aims to prepare students to achieve better results in the competitive Diploma programme offered by SDH Institute.

Course Objectives

This course sets out the framework for educational progression that will support learners moving into SDH Diploma and under the Curriculum, foundation students have to demonstrate that they are competent in a number of areas including communication and presentation skills.

The course provides generic training that ensures students develop and demonstrate a range of essential interpersonal and communicational skills conditions, regardless of the course specialty.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum Age: Sixteen (16) Year Old
  • Obtained an overall pass in GCE ‘N’ Level with at least a Grade 5 (five) in at least 2 (two) GCE ‘N’ Level subjects or at least Secondary 3 education, or Junior High School Certificate or Equivalent
  • English Language Proficiency: IELTS 3.0 or Equivalent

Mode of Delivery

  • Classroom-based Lectures, Tutorial, Discussions and/or Research

Assessment Methods

Students will be assessed by the following methods:

  • online assignments set daily.
  • practical assignments set for each module.
  • examinations given at the end of each module.

Graduation Requirements

  • Obtained a pass in all modules

Progression Pathway

  • Students who complete the Certificate in Foundation Studies are able to enroll in Diploma in Business Management and others Diploma awarded by SDH Institute subject to meeting the course entry requirements.

Course Modules

    Each module of the course is designed to enrich different aspects of the learning experience, providing a holistic enhancement of the learner’s potential.
    Classes will be attended for 5 hours per day, comprised of either 3 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon or vice versa. An optional further hour will be given for students to complete online assignments in the classroom, should they choose to do so.

CEFLE English Foundation - Level 1 Contact hours: 90 hours

The module focuses on enabling students to construct simple sentences, which are structurally sound. Students should be able to communicate simply on common topics and begin to differentiate between simple tenses.

CEFLP English Foundation - Level 2 Contact hours: 90 hours

The module focuses on assisting students in their transition to independent users of English. Students will be taught to use and improve their English skills without assistance and should be able to interact in a diverse range of settings, including attending lectures delivered in English, taking notes and submitting assignments.

CEFLI English Foundation - Level 3 Contact hours: 180 hours

The module focuses on assisting students in their transition to independent users of English. Students will be taught to use and improve their English skills without assistance and should be able to interact in a diverse range of settings, including attending lectures delivered in English, taking notes and submitting assignments.

CFSI End-User Computing (IT) Contact hours: 50 hours

The module has distinctive theoretical and practical components. The former focuses on an understanding of the setup, performance and functionality of IT systems and how they are rapidly changing, explaining current legal and ethical interpretations of the use of IT and its impact on our social environment. The latter is dedicated to the efficient application of end user software, with the goal of producing competent users of a variety of commonly used software in both the academic and business environment.

CFSM Fundamental Mathematics and Statistics Contact hours: 50 hours

The module focuses on understanding the basic concepts of mathematics and statistics and how they can be understood in terms of our natural and social environment. Student will be taught how to perform basic calculations and also to understand how such calculations are used both accurately and inaccurately in media representations.

CFST Thinking Writing and Presentation Skills Contact hours: 50 hours

The module is designed to enhance students’ communicative ability, assisting them to record, construct and communicate information in a logical fashion. Students are also taught to differentiate between analytical, emotive and persuasive language and the situations in which they are most appropriate. The module also focuses on analysing, critiquing and producing logically constructed arguments, teaching students to speak confidently and effectively in front of an audience.

CFSB Introduction to Business Contact hours: 50 hours

The module focuses on understanding the basic concepts of the business world. Students are taught the fundamentals of what businesses are, what they do and how they operate in an economic environment. Students are also given a brief overview of how different organizations may be structured, as well as different approaches to production, marketing, accounting and human resource management.
